Meet Our Herd of Nubians

We have a small herd of Nubian goats that our family uses for milk. The first two lovelies that we begin our milking and show journey were “Indigo” and “Lady”! Then “Benjamin” came along and became our herd sire. This year “Lady” and “Indigo” gave us two additional milkers, “Blueberry” and “Beatrice”.

“Lady” is a very sophisticated lady hence her name, with a no non-sense personality. She tolerates your hugs and kisses with a slight grimacing face. You can almost hear her saying “be gone peasant.”

“Indigo” is our sweet goofy girl. She is the first one to the gate when any stranger comes with her hair on end like a dog ready to pick a fight. You will always catch her around noon sleeping all scrunched up in on of the feed bins.

“Blueberry” is the boss even though she is second to the youngest in our herd. She rarely hangs out with the goats but you will find her spending her days bossing all the lambs around. She is their ring leader and they do what she says. Sheep are followers and goats tend to be bossy. The goats don’t always listen to other goats but sheep always listen. Blueberry learned this early in her young life and she pretty frequently uses it to her advantage.

“Beatrice” is a sweet girl but you won’t find her seeking human friendship. You will usually find her planning her next escape from the pen or spending her time taking care of her twin brother “Boe”, like he is helpless and incapable of helping himself. She leads him around and if he does not follow her she will scream until he gets moving. She is always talking him into being her jailbreak partner.

“Benjamin” is the man of the herd. You will often see him strutting around slow and majestic like some pretty boy model trying to impress the ladies. He is a real sweetheart and loves getting his neck scratched.
